The symptoms of oak wilt are red and white oaks that appear drought stressed. Often they have curled leaves that are part green and part brown and dried out, with a distinct line between the two. Die back starting at the top of tree (red oaks) or large areas of die back in canopy (white oaks) are common symptoms. Oak wilt is a devastating fungal disease caused by Bretziella fagacearum. Infecting the vascular system of oak trees, ultimately leading to their demise. NorthWest Indiana has seen incidences severely increase in recent years. Fortunetly arborists at The Green Advantage have been tracking and studying this disease for over a decade. Although, there are a large variety of oak subspecies, for our area, it is helpful to split them into two larger categories: white oaks and red oaks. The reason for this division is how the disease progresses differently in each. Red oak, which include black oak, northern red oak, cherry bark oak, pin oak just to name a few. The white oak group includes: burr oak, swamp oak, white oak as well as many others. Some identifying factors are the leaves and the bark. Generally, red oak leaves have pointed lobes while white oaks are rounded. The bark of red oaks tends to be smoother with very little lateral ridges. In the shallow ridges of red oaks there is often a reddish hue (hence the name). White oaks on the other hand have lighter colored bark, sometimes appearing white (where they get their name). White oak bark has deep ridges, with many lateral ridges. There are other identifying features, but these tend to be the most universal. The reason identifying between red and white is important is that oak wilt effects each type a bit differently. Red oaks meet their demise far more rapidly than white oaks. It is not uncommon to hear about a red oak that was looking as healthy as ever a month ago, and now is completely dead. White oaks on the other hand, can survive months sometimes years after infection. While infected, white oaks tend to lose large sections of canopy before eventually failing completely. Regardless of whether the trees are red oaks or white oaks, prevention is the best antidote. The oak wilt disease cycle starts with the nitidulid beetle, also known as sap beetles. Sap beetles are attracted to wounded areas of trees, and especially attracted to wounded areas of oak trees that contain the reproductive fungal mat. These fungal mats contain spores and are most often found on red oaks (this is thought to be one of the reasons red oaks decline so rapidly). The beetle picks up fungal spores as it feeds and then moves onto other trees spreading the spores as it goes. Once a tree is infected, the fungi is spread to nearby trees through root grafts. Trees of the same species in nearby proximity will fuse in the root system. The nitidulid beetles return feeding on these infected trees, and the cycle starts again. The best treatment for oak wilt is proactive, treating before infection. The only known effective treatment is a macro-injection of fungicide. These treatments last for 2-3 years, at which time treatment must be repeated. When there are symptomatic oaks, attention is typically directed towards asymptomatic oaks in the vicinity, as they are extremely high risk. Spring is a critical time for ants to meet the demands of their colonies, and ants making their way into homes to find food causes panic for many homeowners. Worker Ants: Worker ants emerge in the springtime to establish their structures outside on plants like rose bushes and trees where aphids and scales may be feeding. As humidity, rainfall, temperature, and wind change, the location and size of these arenas will change. These ants emerge in the spring due to decreasing respiration and storing energy in fat bodies during the winter months. Worker ants can feed on both solids and liquids. Adult worker ants only feed on liquid foods that contain honeydew, a mixture of glucose and fructose, and amino acids while solid food such as caterpillars and other prey insects are fed to larvae. Wood-Damaging Ants: This specific type of ant causes damage to structures. These ants may include carpenter ants, velvety tree ants, and moist or cornfield ants. Carpenter ant trails will space ants at 1-meter intervals during the day and 1-centimater intervals at night and will build trails through lawns by cutting blades of grass and removing pebbles and other debris. These black or reddish-black ants will mine wood for nests (but will not digest wood). These colonies require foraging activity in the spring which will later switch to swarming activity later in the season. Nuisance Ants: Most of these ants are polygenic, meaning they have more than one queen. Pavement ants and odorous house ants are the most common. They can move in clusters varying from three to six ants wide and belong to colonies with numerous subnets containing a queen, worker, and brood ants. These colonies will most likely be constructed in a single yard around debris, objects, or yard ornaments. Nuisance ants do not cause damage to structures at all but give off a putrid smell once in structures. Although nests occur outside, temperature changes can draw the ants inside in which they’ll immediately attracted towards moist areas like plumbing. Asian Needle Ants:

These ants usually nest around homes and businesses and their presence rarely goes unnoticed as their stings are painful and venomous. Pine Tree Decline There are many factors that affect plant health. One thing contributing to decline of Pine Trees is that they do best in well drained, sandy soil. Although this habitat is plentiful in NWI, there is also a lot of clay, compacted soil. Aerating compacted soils is one way to combat this issue and increase drainage. Liquid root zone fertilizers, designed with pH adjustments, are fantastic for this purpose. Plants not in their optimal environment are prone to stress. This stress leaves them more susceptible to biotic disease, like insects and fungal problems. It is almost never one thing that leads to the demise of a tree, typically a tree is under stress leaving it vulnerable to other issues. Choosing the right plants for the environment is critical. One way to address the issue is to amend the soil. This is easiest when done while planting. Removing soil that is not optimum and replacing it with soil that correlates with a plant’s preferred medium. This can be done after a tree is established but is costly and requires specialty equipment. Alternatively, soil can be aerated hydraulically, and supplements can be added at the same time through root zone fertilization. Pines are susceptible to multiple fungal pathogens. Lack of air flow and high humidity promote these diseases. Increasing air flow is one cultural management practice that can help. Thinning pine trees is the way this is accomplished. It is often not a preferred method as it can take a toll on the aesthetic properties of the tree. Our experience has shown that although this helps, timely fungicide applications are, more often than not, still necessary. Insects and mites also can be troublesome to pine trees. Nematoides, microscopic worms, are lethal to certain pine varieties. After confirmation and identification of insect pests, a treatment plan can be put in place. Specific insecticides and miticides are often necessary. These do require timely applications. We have noticed that products that have worked in the past are not always effective. We have also determined that timing of applications can render the service ineffective.
